Who is Buddothpado Aryan Wahanse?
In the absence of those endowed with profound wisdom, the absolute truth often becomes obscured, buried beneath the sands of time. Over 2,500 years ago, the Buddha illuminated this truth—the eternal Dhamma. For generations, this truth was meticulously preserved by Arhants through an unbroken oral tradition known as the Bhanaka system. Recognizing the inevitable decline of the Arhants era, these sages convened during the Fourth Buddhist Council at Aluvihara Temple in Matale, Sri Lanka, around 29–17 BCE, inscribing the sacred Tripitaka on palm leaves to safeguard the teachings for future generations.
Today, the world is once again blessed with the emergence of a luminous guide in Buddothpado Aryan Wahanse. Having devoted over 30 years to self-investigation, meditation, and an unwavering pursuit of the Dhamma in many forest Monasteries in Sri Lanka, he has attained transcendental wisdom by the meticulous and careful investigation of the very Same Tripitaka. With this profound realization, Aryan Wahanse has dedicated the past four years to sharing the timeless truth of the Buddha’s teachings, ensuring it is accessible to all who seek liberation from suffering.
From a young age, Aryan Wahanse sought the ultimate truths of existence, traveling across Sri Lanka, immersing himself in rigorous meditation practices. Through decades of practice, he mastered Jhānas (meditative absorptions). However, like Siddhartha Gautama, he recognized that concentration-based meditation, while powerful, was insufficient for attaining Nibbāna. This realization marked a transformative moment in his journey, redirecting his focus toward the Middle Way.
During an advanced meditative state in Asañña-ṭhāla (the plane of non-perception), Aryan Wahanse observed that even in the absence of ordinary perception, self-perception persisted. This profound insight revealed the limitations of suppressing the mind and affirmed that true liberation lies in cultivating Vipassanā with Vidarshana (insight meditation). Through diligent practice rooted in the Tripitaka, Aryan Wahanse realized that liberation is achieved through the gradual dissolution of defilements and ignorance, aligning with the Buddha’s profound teachings.
In 2017–2018, Aryan Wahanse began sharing the Dhamma but was met with limited receptivity. For two years, he refrained from teaching. However, in 2020, during a life-threatening battle with COVID in 2020, a sense of urgency arose within him. He realized that withholding the Dhamma would deprive seekers of truth from experiencing its transformative power. Thus, the Buddothpado YouTube channel was born, heralding a new era of Global Dhamma teaching.
Today, Aryan Wahanse’s contributions to the world are unparalleled. He tirelessly conducts six Zoom discussions daily, providing personalized guidance and clarifying doubts for Dhamma practitioners. His teachings illuminate three profound stages of wisdom: Wisdom of Truth (Sathya Jñāna), Wisdom of Duty (Kṛutya Jñāna), and Wisdom of Accomplishment (Kṛutak Jñāna). These stages outline the path of liberation, known as the Avidyā Ashesha Virāga Nirodha Niwan Maga, rooted in the Buddha’s teachings.
Over 5,000 sermons, grounded in personal experience and enriched with practical insights, have transformed countless lives. Delivered with compassion and clarity, Aryan Wahanse’s teachings expose the pitfalls of the spiritual journey and offer profound solace to those grappling with suffering. His message resonates deeply, bringing tranquility and freedom from defilements meaning freedom from suffering to followers worldwide.
Aryan Wahanse emphasizes the self-evident nature of the Dhamma as mentioned in Kalama Sutra: “Understand first. Investigate deeply. If it leads to diminishment of your own defilements, follow it.” His teachings transcend extremes such as Annihilationism and eternalism, reflecting the Middle Path that is the hallmark of the Buddha’s legacy.
In the Buddha’s own words, “Yo Dhammaṃ passati, yo maṃ passati”—“He who sees the Dhamma sees me.” Through the compassionate guidance of Aryan Wahanse, many have experienced the Buddha’s presence within the Dhamma itself. This rare opportunity to receive the teachings of a realized master is an immeasurable blessing for seekers of truth.
